DNS records for your sender domain
After you add a sender domain, SmartMailer shows you a few DNS records. You add them at your DNS provider, the place where the DNS of your domain is managed. Here is the general procedure and the steps at the most common providers.
Which records you add
The exact names and values are in the domain detail in SmartMailer. Every record there has buttons to copy its name and value.
- TXT
_amazonses: confirms that the domain is yours. - CNAME ending in
._domainkey: the DKIM signature that tells mailbox providers the e-mail really was sent by SmartMailer on behalf of your domain. - MX and TXT on the MAIL FROM subdomain (e.g.
mailsm.yourcompany.com): the technical sending address and the SPF record. - TXT
_dmarc: the DMARC policy that Gmail and Seznam require from bulk senders.
Step by step
-
1
Open the domain detail in SmartMailer
In Project settings > Sender domains, expand the domain. You will see all records and the verification state of each.
-
2
Sign in at your DNS provider
The DNS provider is usually the domain registrar or the web hosting. If the domain uses the name servers of another service (for example Cloudflare), add the records there.
-
3
Add each record separately
For each record choose the type (TXT, CNAME, MX) and copy the name (without the zone domain, see below) and the value from SmartMailer. The copy button in the domain detail copies the full name, so remove the domain from it. Keep the default TTL or enter the value from SmartMailer.
-
4
Save the changes
Some providers want you to confirm or apply the changes as well. The steps at specific providers are below.
-
5
Wait and verify
The changes usually propagate within tens of minutes, rarely up to 24 hours. Then click Verify again in the domain detail. A verified record shows OK.
Watch out for
- Most providers append the domain you manage with them (the zone) to the name themselves. Enter only the name without the zone domain: for
yourcompany.comthat is_amazonsesinstead of_amazonses.yourcompany.com. If you send from a subdomain such asnews.yourcompany.comand the zone isyourcompany.com, enter_amazonses.news. If you paste the full name, you get_amazonses.yourcompany.com.yourcompany.comand the verification fails. - The MX value in SmartMailer starts with the priority
10. If the form has a separate priority field, enter10there and onlyfeedback-smtp.eu-west-1.amazonses.comas the value. - Enter TXT values without quotes. A provider that needs them adds them itself.
- Do not delete or change the existing records of your domain. The MX and SPF records from SmartMailer belong on the MAIL FROM subdomain, so your website and existing mailboxes keep working.
- SmartMailer checks the
_dmarcrecord of the sender domain itself, so fornews.yourcompany.comit is_dmarc.news.yourcompany.com. The DMARC record of the main domain is not enough. That name can have only one DMARC record: if there already is one, do not add another, SmartMailer accepts it.
WEDOS (VEDOS)
- In the customer administration, choose DNS in the top menu, open the domain detail and then DNS záznamy (DNS records) in the left menu.
- Add each record separately with the Nový záznam (new record) button. In Název (name) enter only the name without the zone domain, choose the type in Typ and paste the value into Data.
- For MX, the Data field takes the priority, a space and the server, which is the whole value from SmartMailer:
10 feedback-smtp.eu-west-1.amazonses.com. Remove the quotes from TXT values. - Save each record with Uložit záznam (save record) and finally click Aplikovat změny (apply changes).
Forpsi
- In the customer administration, choose "Domény" (domains), click the domain name and then "Editace DNS záznamů" (edit DNS records).
- If the "Editace DNS záznamů" link is missing, the DNS of the domain is most likely at another provider. Add the records there.
- Choose the "Typ" (type), enter only the name without the zone domain in "Hostname", paste the value into "Hodnota" (value) and keep the default "TTL". For MX, enter
10in "Priorita" (priority) and onlyfeedback-smtp.eu-west-1.amazonses.comin "Hodnota". - Save each record with the "Přidat" (add) button.
Active24
- Sign in to "WebAdmin", click the domain in the "Služby" (services) list, choose "DNS" in the left menu and then "DNS nastavení" (DNS settings).
- You can edit the records at Active24 only if the domain uses the Active24 name servers. Otherwise add them at the provider whose name servers the domain uses.
- Switch to the tab of the record type ("TXT", "CNAME", "MX") and create a new record. In "Pro adresu" (for address) enter only the name without the zone domain, put the TXT value into "Hodnota" (value) and the CNAME target into "Cílová adresa" (target address). For MX, enter only
feedback-smtp.eu-west-1.amazonses.comin "Mailový server" (mail server) and10in "Priorita" (priority). - Save each record with "Uložte změny" (save changes).
- If you still have the original Zákaznické centrum (customer centre), the records are under "Domény" > "Přehled domén" > domain detail > "DNS záznamy". The fields there are "Název" (name), "Typ" (type), "Text" (TXT), "Alias" (CNAME) and "TTL".
Websupport
- Sign in to WebAdmin, click the domain in the list of services and choose DNS in the left menu.
- Switch to the tab of the record type (TXT, CNAME, MX) and click "Vytvoriť nový záznam" (create new record).
- In "Pre adresu" (for address) enter only the name without the zone domain, and the value from SmartMailer in "Hodnota" (value). For MX, enter
10in "Priorita" (priority) and onlyfeedback-smtp.eu-west-1.amazonses.comin "Mailový server" (mail server). - Save each record with "Uložte zmeny" (save changes).
Cloudflare
- In the Cloudflare dashboard, select the domain and open DNS > Records.
- Click Add record, choose the Type, enter only the name without the zone domain in Name and save the record with Save. Enter the TXT value without quotes, Cloudflare adds them itself.
- For the DKIM CNAME records, switch Proxy status to DNS only (grey cloud). A proxied record would fail the verification.
- For MX, enter only
feedback-smtp.eu-west-1.amazonses.comas the Mail server and10as the Priority.
Other provider
- You add the records where the DNS of the domain is: at the registrar, at the web hosting or at a service like Cloudflare. The name servers (NS) of the domain tell you which one it is.
- In the administration, look for an item called DNS, DNS records, Zone or DNS editor.
- If you are stuck, send the list of records from the domain detail in SmartMailer to your provider. They will add the records for you.
